What is ECU remapping?
ECU remapping, also known as flash tuning or ECU tuning, changes selected calibration settings within your vehicle’s Engine Control Unit.
The ECU manages important engine functions such as:
Fuel delivery
Ignition timing
Turbocharger boost control
Throttle response
Torque output
Engine protection strategies
Manufacturers calibrate vehicles to work across different markets, fuel qualities, climates and operating conditions. A professionally selected or developed ECU calibration can change how the engine delivers its available performance.
Flash tuning describes the process of reading and writing software to the ECU. ECU remapping describes the calibration changes made within that software.
The quality of the result depends on the calibration, the vehicle’s mechanical condition and the knowledge of the person carrying out the work.

The most useful tune is not always the one with the highest peak horsepower figure.
For vehicles used for towing, carrying loads or daily driving, stronger low- and mid-range torque will often make a greater difference than maximum power at high engine speed.

On-site diagnostics and testing
Our Frankton workshop has diagnostic equipment and an on-site rolling-road dyno.
The dyno may be used for in-house testing, fault diagnosis and verification as part of selected tuning or repair work. We do not currently offer standalone dyno power runs as a separately bookable service.

The correct approach depends on the vehicle and its intended use.
2. Assess the vehicle
Before tuning, we may check the vehicle for stored fault codes and review relevant live operating data.
Additional inspection or diagnosis may be required where there are signs of:
Boost-control faults
Fuel-pressure problems
Ignition misfires
Intake or exhaust restrictions
Cooling-system issues
Transmission problems
Existing warning lights or limp mode
We will not knowingly tune around an unresolved mechanical fault.
3. Identify and read the ECU
We identify the exact ECU hardware and software version and confirm the appropriate reading and programming method.
Where supported, the original ECU calibration is read and retained before changes are made.
4. Select or develop the calibration
The calibration must suit:
The specific vehicle and engine
ECU hardware and software
Mechanical condition
Existing modifications
Fuel quality
Transmission limitations
Intended use
We favour controlled, usable performance over aggressive settings designed only to produce a marketing number.
5. Program and verify the vehicle
After the ECU has been programmed, we check the vehicle’s operation and verify the result.
Depending on the vehicle and the work being carried out, this may include diagnostic checks, road testing, data logging or in-house dyno testing.
6. Explain the result
We explain what has been changed, the outcome of the work and any operating or maintenance recommendations.
You leave knowing what was done and what you can realistically expect from the vehicle.
ECU tuning for modified vehicles
Modified vehicles often need more than a generic off-the-shelf calibration.
Changes to components such as the turbocharger, fuel system, intake, exhaust, camshafts or engine internals can alter the engine’s airflow, fuelling requirements and safe operating limits.
We can assess selected modified road cars, classic vehicles, hot rods and performance applications to determine the appropriate engine-management solution.

Components that look impressive individually do not necessarily create a well-matched engine package. Planning the complete combination first can prevent poor drivability, tuning limitations and unnecessary expense.
Will ECU remapping improve fuel economy?
ECU remapping may improve fuel economy in some vehicles, but fuel savings are not guaranteed.
Improved torque delivery may allow a vehicle to perform the same work with less throttle or fewer gear changes. That can reduce fuel consumption when the vehicle is driven in the same way.
However, regularly using the additional performance will normally increase fuel consumption.
Driving style, vehicle load, road conditions, tyre condition, maintenance and the original calibration will all affect the result.
Anyone guaranteeing a large power increase and a major fuel saving without assessing the vehicle is making a sales claim—not giving responsible technical advice.
Is ECU remapping safe?
ECU remapping can be carried out reliably when:
The vehicle is mechanically healthy
The calibration suits the exact vehicle
Engine and transmission limits are respected
Appropriate fuel is used
The vehicle is correctly maintained
Poor-quality or overly aggressive tuning can increase exhaust temperatures, cause detonation or combustion problems and place excessive load on the turbocharger, engine or transmission.
That is why the vehicle’s condition and the quality of the calibration matter.
Can ECU tuning remove a warning light?
ECU tuning should not be used as a substitute for proper fault diagnosis.
A warning light, performance problem or limp-mode condition means the vehicle needs to be checked. Altering software without identifying the cause may hide the symptom while the original fault continues to worsen.

How much power will my vehicle gain?
There is no responsible universal answer.
Potential gains depend on:

Some turbocharged vehicles have substantial tuning potential. Others have limited gains available without hardware changes.

Does ECU tuning affect the vehicle warranty or insurance?
ECU remapping may affect a manufacturer, dealer or mechanical warranty.
You should also advise your insurer of performance-related vehicle modifications. Insurance policies and warranty conditions differ, so confirm the requirements that apply to your vehicle before proceeding.
We will not tell you that a modification is invisible or guaranteed not to affect your cover.
