Audi S4 V8 idle misfire traced to camshaft timing

This Audi S4 V8 had a misfire at idle. We traced the problem to one of its camshafts being out of time.

A big job behind a rough idle

Camshaft timing controls when the engine’s valves open and close. When that timing is wrong, it can affect how the engine runs. On this car, correcting the timing issue meant a substantial repair.

We carried out a full reseal and timing-chain replacement. The workshop photos show the engine and exposed timing assembly during the job.

Back together, misfire fixed

With the work complete and the engine back together, the idle misfire was resolved.

Every misfire needs its own diagnosis. A rough idle alone does not tell you that an engine needs timing chains, so the first step is to establish what is causing the problem on that vehicle.
