A BMW came into our Hamilton workshop for a service. While checking it over, we noticed deterioration around the coolant-line connections that needed attention.
The photos show the areas that caught our eye. The coolant lines had not been replaced at the time of this write-up.
It is a useful example of why the condition of the parts under the bonnet matters, even when a car is booked in for routine servicing.
Why cooling connections deserve attention
Hoses and their connections have to cope with repeated heating and cooling. As they deteriorate, leaks can develop. Moisture, drips or staining around a hose connection are reasons to have it checked. Component manufacturer Gates includes these among the signs technicians look for when investigating coolant-hose problems.
Looking at the condition of the connection, as well as the hose itself, helps us decide where more attention is needed.
What to tell your mechanic
If you have noticed coolant loss, repeated top-ups or a dashboard coolant warning, mention it when booking. Tell us when it happens and whether anything has changed recently. A photo of the warning, taken when safely parked, can also help.
Follow the warning instructions for your vehicle. Never remove a coolant cap while the engine is hot, as escaping coolant can cause burns. If you are unsure whether to keep driving, stop somewhere safe and ask for advice.
