A pre-purchase inspection can help you understand a used vehicle’s condition before you buy. It can identify visible wear, faults and signs that further investigation is needed, but it cannot guarantee the vehicle’s future reliability. Here is what an inspection can include.
A proper inspection starts with a full underbody check on a hoist, not a five-minute look with a torch. We're checking for rust (especially around sills, chassis rails, and suspension mounting points, which matters more in older Hamilton-registered cars), fluid leaks from the engine, gearbox, and differential, and the condition of the exhaust, brake lines, and suspension bushes. This is the part that's almost impossible to do properly in a driveway or a car park, which is why hoist access matters.
We check available fault codes and relevant diagnostic information. A scan does not provide a complete history, and recently cleared or intermittent faults may not be present during the inspection. We also check the battery and charging system, tyre tread and wear pattern (uneven wear can point to alignment or suspension issues), and brake pad and disc thickness.
Then there's the test drive itself: checking the transmission shifts smoothly through every gear, the clutch bites where it should, the steering doesn't pull to one side, and there are no unusual noises over bumps or on tight turns. We finish with a written report that lists exactly what we found, split into safety issues, things that need attention soon, and minor items, so you know what you're actually negotiating on or walking away from.
