Seen an AdBlue warning pop up on the dash of your VW or Audi diesel, maybe with a message counting down the kilometres left before the car won't restart? It catches a lot of Hamilton diesel owners off guard, especially if they've never had to think about AdBlue before. The good news: it's rarely something serious on its own, but it does need sorting quickly.
AdBlue (also called DEF, or diesel exhaust fluid) is the fluid your VW or Audi's SCR system injects into the exhaust to cut NOx emissions. Run the tank dry and the car is designed to limit performance, and eventually refuse to restart, until it's topped up. If you're driving between Frankton and Te Rapa and the range countdown hits zero, it pays to have a plan before that happens.
What's usually behind it
Low AdBlue level: the simplest cause. Levels drop gradually with normal driving, and a top-up (often just a few litres from a bottle) clears the warning straight away.
A faulty AdBlue level sensor: sometimes the tank still has plenty of fluid but the sensor reads incorrectly, triggering a warning that won't clear even after a top-up.
A blocked or failing injector in the SCR system: this stops AdBlue reaching the exhaust properly. On some models it can trigger a reduced-power mode alongside the warning.
NOx sensor or SCR catalyst faults: less common, but these can mimic a straightforward AdBlue problem and need a proper diagnostic scan to pin down.
Is it serious?
On its own, a low AdBlue warning isn't an emergency: top it up and you're generally fine. But ignore it and let the tank run dry, and most VW and Audi diesels are programmed to prevent the engine restarting once you turn it off, which can leave you stranded. If the warning keeps coming back after a top-up, that points to a sensor or system fault rather than just low fluid, and it's worth getting looked at before it escalates into a limp-home mode or a check engine light.
Why get it looked at here instead of the dealer
AdBlue and SCR faults are common enough across the VW Group diesel range that we see them regularly on Golfs, Passats, Tiguans, A4s, A6s, and Q5s. We diagnose the actual cause with the right scan tools rather than just clearing the code, and we use genuine and quality aftermarket parts that won't void your manufacturer warranty. Turnaround is typically faster than booking in with Coombes Johnston, Ebbett VW, or Ebbett Audi, and you get European-specialist attention rather than a slot in a general queue.
