You're pulling out of the driveway in Hamilton — maybe heading down Peachgrove Road or onto the expressway — and the EPC light comes on the dash, sometimes alongside a check engine light, sometimes with the car suddenly feeling gutless. EPC stands for Electronic Power Control, and it's VW and Audi's system for managing throttle, traction, and cruise control electronically. What's usually behind it
Throttle body or accelerator pedal sensor fault: the throttle body and the accelerator pedal position sensor talk to each other electronically on these cars, and a fault in either can trigger EPC. Often shows up as hesitant or reduced acceleration alongside the light.
Low or fluctuating battery voltage: this catches a lot of owners out — a weak battery or a failing alternator can cause voltage to drop just enough to trigger a false EPC fault, even though nothing else is actually wrong with the throttle system. Wiring or connector issues: corrosion or a loose connector in the engine bay wiring loom, particularly around the throttle body or pedal sensor, can cause an intermittent EPC fault that comes and goes.
Vacuum or boost leak: on turbocharged VW/Audi engines, a vacuum or boost leak can affect throttle control enough to trip the EPC system, often paired with reduced power or rough idle.
Is it serious?
