You start your Audi or VW on a cold Hamilton morning — heading out from Chartwell, Rototuna, or down Ulster Street — and there's a rattling or chain-like noise from the engine for the first second or two before it settles. If you drive a car with the EA888 engine (common across the A3, A4, Golf, Passat, and Tiguan ranges), this is one of the most talked-about issues in owner forums, and for good reason.
It's easy to dismiss as "just a cold start noise," but timing chain issues on the EA888 are well documented, and catching it early is the difference between a straightforward repair and a full engine rebuild.
What's usually behind it
Worn or stretched timing chain: rattle is most noticeable in the first 1-2 seconds after starting, especially when cold. Gets progressively louder or longer over weeks/months if left unaddressed. More common past 80,000-100,000km, though some earlier-model EA888s are known to wear faster.
Failing timing chain tensioner: similar rattle, but can also produce a knocking noise under load or acceleration. Often the first component to fail before the chain itself is badly worn. Tensioners on early EA888 generations (Gen 1/2) are a known weak point.
Low oil pressure or degraded oil: rattle can mimic chain wear, especially if oil has been left too long between services. Usually resolves once oil is topped up or changed, but should be confirmed rather than assumed. A good reason not to stretch service intervals on these engines.
Chain guide wear: more common at higher mileage. Slightly different pitch than a straightforward rattle — often described as a "chatter." Left unchecked, guide failure can lead to the chain jumping timing entirely.
Is it serious?
Yes — this is one of the few "cold start noises" we'd actually encourage you not to ignore. Unlike a lot of minor rattles, a worn timing chain or tensioner on an EA888 can jump timing if it fails completely, which can cause serious internal engine damage. The earlier it's caught, the more likely it's a chain and tensioner replacement rather than a full engine rebuild.
