What's actually causing it
Worn VANOS solenoid seals: rattle lasts a few seconds on cold start, disappears once oil pressure builds. Gets slightly louder or lasts longer over time if left unaddressed. No warning light in early stages.
Low oil level or degraded oil: similar rattle, but often paired with other symptoms like a knocking noise. More common if service intervals have been stretched out. Usually resolves once oil is topped up or changed — but worth confirming it's not masking a VANOS issue underneath.
Timing chain guide wear (higher mileage engines): rattle can extend beyond the first few seconds. Often a slightly different pitch — more of a rattle-and-chatter than a tick. Worth catching early, since chain guide failure is a much bigger job than a VANOS reseal.
Is it serious?
A brief tick that clears within a few seconds usually isn't an emergency, but VANOS wear doesn't fix itself — it gradually gets worse, and BMW's VANOS system directly affects valve timing, so ignoring it can eventually affect performance and fuel economy.
